A Sunset Proposal at Castelo de São Jorge | Emily & Alex
I've photographed a few proposals at Castelo de São Jorge over the years and every time someone asks me where they should propose in Lisbon, it inevitably ends up somewhere near the top of my list. Not because it's a secret location, and definitely not because it's difficult to find, but because there are very few places in the city that give you quite the same feeling. You're standing above centuries of history, looking out over a sea of terracotta rooftops, church towers and winding streets, with the Tagus River stretching across the horizon. It feels unmistakably Lisbon in a way that very few places do.
When Alex first got in touch with me, he didn’t have a idea of what he wanted. He knew he wanted to propose while they were in Lisbon and he knew he wanted it to happen somewhere with a view. The only complication was that they weren't travelling alone. Emily and Alex were visiting the city with a group of friends, which meant pulling off a surprise proposal required a little more planning than usual. Thankfully, they were surrounded by exactly the kind of friends you want in this situation: the kind who can casually disappear for twenty minutes without making the entire thing look suspicious.
The plan was simple enough. The group would spend the afternoon exploring Alfama and Castelo de São Jorge was in the mix of locations to check. At some point naturally split up for a little while, leaving Alex and Emily alone with one of the most spectacular views in Lisbon. From there, the rest would take care of itself. As anyone who has ever planned a proposal knows, "simple" is a very relative term.
No matter how carefully someone plans every detail, there is always a moment beforehand where they are essentially carrying around the world's most obvious secret while desperately trying to convince their partner that everything is completely normal. Meanwhile, the person about to be proposed to is usually talking about dinner plans, sightseeing, or whether they remembered to put sunscreen on that morning, completely unaware that their life is about to change in the next few minutes.
As the afternoon light started becoming softer and warmer, they found themselves standing on one of the viewpoints overlooking Lisbon. Below them, the city stretched endlessly towards the river. Around them, the castle walls glowed in the late afternoon sun. Behind them, their friends had successfully vanished just long enough for Alex to ask the question he'd travelled all the way to Portugal to ask. Emily said yes. Followed by a lot of laughing. A lot of staring at the ring. A lot of repeating variations of "I can't believe this just happened." Emily spent a large part of the next hour smiling in a way that made it very clear she had absolutely no intention of coming back down to earth anytime soon.
Before long, their friends reappeared and the celebrations properly began. There were hugs, congratulations, excited conversations and the kind of energy that only exists when an entire group of people have been successfully keeping the same secret. Watching everyone share in that moment felt incredibly special because proposals rarely belong only to the couple. They're also about the people who have supported them, cheered for them and helped get them to this point. Once the celebrations settled down, we spent the rest of the evening wandering through Castelo de São Jorge for an engagement session while the sun slowly began setting over Lisbon.
And this is the part I where I can finally relax a little. The secret is gone. The planning is over. Nobody is worried about whether the proposal will happen on time, whether they'll find the right spot or whether the ring is still safely hidden away. Suddenly all that's left is excitement.
The castle gave us everything we could possibly have wanted. Ancient stone archways framing the city below. Quiet viewpoints overlooking the rooftops of Alfama. Warm golden light filtering through the trees. Even the resident peacocks decided to make a few appearances throughout the evening. Everywhere we turned seemed to offer another backdrop that somehow felt completely different from the last one.
What I particularly loved about this session was how naturally it unfolded, we simply explored the castle together. Some of my favourite photographs from the evening happened in those in-between moments when Emily and Alex forgot about the camera altogether and simply enjoyed being engaged in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. By the time the sun finally dipped lower towards the horizon, Lisbon had started glowing beneath us.
The entire city seemed to settle into that magical period between golden hour and blue hour when everything feels just a little bit cinematic.
It was the perfect ending to a day that had already become unforgettable.
