Golden hour view over Alfama rooftops and historic Lisbon architecture in Portugal

Lisbon is the kind of city that makes you slow down without even noticing.

Maybe it’s the golden light reflecting off old tiled buildings, the smell of fresh pastéis de nata escaping tiny cafés or the fact that every good evening here somehow turns into dinner at midnight and one more glass of wine.

The city feels alive in a very specific way. A little chaotic, very romantic and impossible not to romanticise at every opportunity.

Whether you’re planning a destination wedding in Portugal, an engagement session in Lisbon or simply visiting with the person you love most, this is my guide to experiencing the city beautifully.

Lisbon has so many beautiful neighborhoods, but choosing the right area completely changes the feeling of your trip or wedding weekend.

Alfama

Most romantic and historic.

Chiado

Best balance between elegance, restaurants and walkability.

Príncipe Real

Stylish, quieter and full of beautiful cafés and boutique hotels.

Avenida da Liberdade

Luxury hotels, shopping and easy transportation.

Santos

Creative, calmer and close to great restaurants and the river.

02 - Engagement Locations In Lisbon

As a Lisbon wedding photographer, these are the places I always find myself recommending to couples wanting engagement photos that feel cinematic, emotional and naturally connected to the city.

Alfama, Rossio & Bairro Alto

The heart of old Lisbon. Tiled streets, little cafés, yellow trams and the kind of movement that makes photos feel alive instead of posed.

The Lisbon Castle

Quiet corners, warm stone walls and some of the softest sunset light in the city. Perfect for couples wanting Lisbon views without the chaos below.

Belém

A slower and more open side of Lisbon, filled with riverside walks, historic architecture and soft golden light reflecting off the water.

Sintra & Colares

Foggy forests, dramatic cliffs, lush greenery and enough fairytale energy to make everything feel slightly unreal in the best possible way.

Cascais

Coastal elegance with a softer pace. Ocean views, little streets, sunset dinners and a mix of beach-town calm with polished European charm.

Tróia & Comporta

Barefoot luxury, sandy dunes, pine trees and warm golden evenings that feel like summer slowed all the way down.

I’ve put together a guide to some of my favorite proposal and engagement locations near Lisbon, from beautiful city views to quieter coastal spots and hidden corners that feel way more special in real life than they do online.

04 - Restaurants & Rooftops

One thing Lisbon does exceptionally well? Long dinners.

The kind where nobody checks the time, someone orders another bottle of wine and suddenly it’s 1am.

If you’re in for something romantic and exquisite, here’s my recommendations for restaurants followed by the coolest rooftops with the most amazing views of Lisbon.

05 - Best Day Trips Near Lisbon

One of the best things about getting married in Lisbon is how quickly the atmosphere changes once you leave the city. Within around two hours, you can go from historic towns and vineyard landscapes to wild coastlines and quiet Alentejo roads, often with beautiful little stops along the way that end up becoming part of the experience itself.

Óbidos

A tiny medieval town filled with cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to romanticise your entire afternoon.

Coimbra

Historic university buildings, quiet streets and a slower atmosphere that feels completely different from Lisbon in the best way possible.

Comporta

Barefoot luxury, long sandy roads, beach clubs hidden in the dunes and the kind of relaxed atmosphere that somehow makes everyone want to stay an extra week.

Costa Vicentina

Wild cliffs, tiny surf towns and some of the most beautiful sunsets in Portugal. Less polished, more freedom-core.

Évora

Golden stone streets, wine bars, slower afternoons and that warm Alentejo atmosphere that somehow makes time feel less important.

06 - Tips From A Local Photographer

Some Places Are Better Early In The Morning

Places like Tram 28, major viewpoints and popular palaces become much more enjoyable early in the day. Locals constantly recommend starting earlier, especially during peak season.

Comfortable Shoes Will Save Your Life

Lisbon is beautiful, but it is also aggressively uphill. Between cobblestones, stairs and old streets, comfortable shoes matter more than people realise, especially for engagement sessions or wedding weekends involving lots of walking.

Late Dinners Are Completely Normal

Dinner in Portugal happens later than many couples expect. Restaurants often only start filling up after 8:30pm, and long dinners that somehow turn into drinks at midnight are basically part of the culture.

Lisbon Gets Windier Than People Expect

Especially near the river, beaches and higher viewpoints. Amazing for summer heat, less amazing if you planned your entire outfit around smooth hair and flowy fabrics.

Some Of The Best Beaches Require Effort

The really beautiful beaches are often the ones involving stairs, dirt roads or slightly questioning your life choices on the way down.

Pastéis De Nata Taste Better Warm

This sounds obvious but locals are VERY serious about it. Freshly baked genuinely changes the experience completely

“Tania was an incredible photographer! We are from the US and we did our destination wedding in Portugal. Tania's work stands out because she really captures the genuine emotions and experience of the big day. She made us feel so comfortable and kept the energy light and fun. I loved that she met with us beforehand too, to get a better sense of who we are as a couple. All the attention to detail really came through in the photographs and I feel like she captured our day perfectly. We love the photos we received, and could not recommend her enough.”
