Lisbon is one of those cities that accidentally turns people into romantics.
Maybe it’s the golden light reflecting off old tiled buildings, the tiny streets that somehow always lead to a viewpoint or the fact that every good evening here somehow becomes dinner at midnight and “just one more glass of wine”.
Whatever it is, this city is ridiculously good for proposals and engagement sessions.
And one of my favourite things about Portugal is that within less than an hour, the entire atmosphere changes. One minute you’re in old Lisbon surrounded by trams and historic streets, the next you’re standing on dramatic cliffs near the ocean wondering if you accidentally walked into a film set.
So instead of creating another generic “Top 10 Lisbon photo spots” guide, I wanted to put together something actually useful.
This guide is divided by atmosphere and experience, because honestly? The best proposal location is the one that actually feels like you.
Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal in Portugal, an engagement session while visiting Lisbon or simply looking for beautiful places near Lisbon for photos, these are some of my favourite locations as a Lisbon wedding photographer.
Best Lisbon Engagement Locations
Choosing a location can feel surprisingly overwhelming when every corner of Lisbon seems photogenic.
The city has a little bit of everything. Historic neighbourhoods, riverside views, grand architecture, colourful streets, modern spaces and enough viewpoints to fill an entire weekend.
After photographing couples across Lisbon for years, these are the locations I return to most often. Not just because they photograph beautifully, but because they offer a genuinely great experience too.
Below you'll find my favourite engagement photo locations in Lisbon, complete with maps and recommended routes to help you decide which area feels right for you.

If Lisbon had a postcard version of itself, it would probably look a lot like this. Perched above Alfama, these neighboring viewpoints offer some of the most iconic views in the city, with terracotta rooftops stretching towards the Tagus, soft morning light bouncing off centuries-old buildings, and enough romantic corners to make you forget you're standing in one of Lisbon's busiest areas. They're classic for a reason, but somehow never feel cliché.

SCENIC & VERSATILE
Belém offers a different side of Lisbon. The streets feel wider, the river feels closer and there is a sense of openness that contrasts beautifully with the narrow lanes of the historic centre. Between grand monuments, waterfront promenades and soft evening light reflecting off the Tagus, it is an ideal choice for couples who love a more spacious, elegant atmosphere.

Parque Das Nações
MODERN AND ARCHITECTURAL
If your version of romance leans more modern than historic, Parque das Nações might be exactly what you're looking for. Contemporary architecture, clean lines, riverside walkways and dramatic light create a completely different mood from the rest of Lisbon. It feels fresh, stylish and effortlessly cool, making it perfect for couples who want their engagement photos to feel a little more fashion-forward while still being unmistakably Portuguese.

If Alfama feels like stepping into the past, Parque das Nações feels like looking ahead. Between the modern architecture, waterfront walkways and open skies, it's a brilliant choice for couples looking for something a little different from the classic Lisbon experience.
What To Wear
The short version? Wear something that feels like you.
The most beautiful photographs rarely come from perfectly coordinated outfits or following strict rules. They come from feeling comfortable, confident and genuinely like yourselves. If you're constantly adjusting a dress, worrying about a shirt that feels too tight or wearing something you'd never normally choose, it tends to show in the photographs.
That said, some colours and textures photograph especially well in Lisbon's soft light.
I usually recommend soft, timeless tones such as cream, beige, stone, olive green, dusty blue, chocolate brown, navy, terracotta or deep bordeaux or pastel tones for that summer feeling.
A few things I'd avoid
Large logos, neon colors and very busy patterns can easily distract from the photographs and often draw attention away from you.
I'd also be cautious with matching outfits. Rather than wearing the exact same colours, aim for pieces that complement each other and feel balanced together.
Finally, try not to wear something purely for the photos if it doesn't feel like you. If you're uncomfortable, constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something you'd never normally choose, it tends to show.
A few outfit ideas
The best outfit is usually the one that makes you feel most like yourself.
Coordinate your looks rather than matching them exactly, mix textures where you can, and choose pieces you'll still love seeing in photographs years from now. Linen shirts, knitwear, denim, flowing dresses and well-loved accessories tend to photograph beautifully. Most importantly, don't think of this as a photoshoot. Think of it as a date that just happens to be photographed. Walk a little slower. Stop for a coffee and get the pastel de nata.
The photographs are important, but the experience is too.

Most engagement sessions in Lisbon last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours. Shorter sessions are perfect if you'd like to focus on a single location, while longer sessions allow us to explore multiple neighbourhoods, viewpoints or routes across the city.
For example, a session in Alfama might include several viewpoints, historic streets and hidden corners all within walking distance, while a longer engagement session could combine areas such as Alfama, Baixa-Chiado and Belém for a much wider variety of photographs.
I always recommend choosing a duration that allows the session to feel relaxed. Some of the best photographs happen in between locations, during the walks, conversations and unexpected moments along the way.

In fact, if you're visiting Lisbon, I often recommend exploring more than one location. Not only does it give us a greater variety of backdrops for your engagement photos, but it also turns the session into a wonderful way to experience the city together.

As soon as possible.
Lisbon has become an increasingly popular destination for engagement photos, surprise proposals and couple sessions, particularly during spring, summer and autumn. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date, time and location.
If you're travelling to Lisbon, I usually recommend reaching out as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. This allows us plenty of time to discuss locations, choose the best route for your session and create a plan that fits naturally into your itinerary.
It's also worth keeping in mind that May through October is wedding season in Portugal. As a wedding photographer, many of my weekends are already reserved for weddings during these months, so availability for engagement sessions can be more limited, especially on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
While I occasionally have last-minute availability, the most sought-after sunrise and sunset dates tend to book up first.

First of all, don't panic.
If the forecast looks particularly challenging, we'll discuss the options together. Depending on the weather, we may decide to adjust the timing, choose a different location or reschedule the session altogether.
That said, I don't automatically run away from a little rain. Some of my favourite photographs have been taken on cloudy days, during light drizzle or just after a rain shower. Empty streets, dramatic skies, reflections on the cobblestones and softer light can create a completely different atmosphere that's often just as beautiful as sunshine.
If you're open to embracing whatever the weather decides to do, Lisbon can be incredibly photogenic in all seasons. Sometimes the unexpected conditions end up creating the most memorable photographs.

Yes, absolutely.
If your dog is part of your story, I'd love for them to be part of your engagement photos too. Some of my favourite engagement sessions in Lisbon have included four-legged family members, and they always bring an extra layer of personality and fun to the experience.
The only thing I recommend is bringing a lead, some treats and, if possible, a friend or family member who can help look after them for part of the session. This gives us the flexibility to capture photographs both with and without your dog while keeping the experience relaxed for everyone involved.
After all, they're family too.

Honestly, whichever works best for your trip and schedule.
Some locations in Lisbon, such as Alfama, Baixa-Chiado and Belém, can be a little quieter during the week, but I wouldn't let that stop you from booking a weekend session if that's what works best for you.
With the right timing, most locations are manageable any day of the week. Sunrise is often a great option if you'd like fewer crowds, but it's definitely not the only one.
