Engagement Session at Palácio de Queluz | Emma & David

I sometimes wonder how many times I've visited Palácio de Queluz in my life. Not photographed. Visited.

Because the truth is that my relationship with this place started long before photography ever entered the picture. Long before weddings, before engagement sessions, before I was carrying cameras around Portugal for a living, I was already wandering through these gardens as a child, completely fascinated by a place that somehow managed to feel both impossibly grand and strangely welcoming at the same time. Some locations become meaningful because of what happens there. Others become meaningful because they accompany different chapters of your life. Palácio de Queluz has always been the second kind for me.

Every few years somebody declares a new location to be Portugal's hidden gem. A beach suddenly appears all over Instagram, a new hotel becomes the place everybody wants to photograph or palace trends on TikTok and for six months you can't open Pinterest without seeing it everywhere and then something new comes along and everyone's attention moves on. Meanwhile, Palácio de Queluz simply continues existing exactly as it always has.

There is something deeply reassuring about places that don't feel the need to reinvent themselves every five minutes. Places that have enough confidence in their own identity to simply remain what they are. Every time I walk through these gardens, I'm reminded that beauty doesn't always need a marketing strategy. And yet, despite being one of the most beautiful palaces in Portugal, I still don't think Queluz gets nearly enough attention from couples visiting Lisbon. Weddings? Yes. Photoshoots? No.

Which brings me to Emma and David.

The couple travelled from Canada and will be getting married later this year, but wanted to celebrate their engagement while they were in Portugal with a photoshoot that felt elegant, timeless and a little reminiscent of the old-money aesthetic that seems to have taken over the internet lately. Not in a costume-like way, not in a trend-chasing way, but in that quieter sense of elegance that prioritises beautiful architecture, classic styling and locations that already have their own story to tell. The moment they described what they were imagining, my brain immediately went to Queluz.

Not because it's trendy or because it's popular but because it's one of the very few places I know that genuinely delivers that feeling.

There are locations that photograph beautifully for fifteen minutes. There are locations that look incredible from one specific angle. Then there are locations where you can spend hours wandering around and still feel like you've barely scratched the surface. Queluz belongs firmly in that second category. Every pathway seems to lead somewhere interesting, every garden reveals another composition and every corner feels like it was designed by somebody who understood that beauty often lives in the details so… photographing Emma and David here felt strangely inevitable.

Emma and David looked like they belong there. Their styling, their energy and the way they interacted with one another all felt completely at home among the gardens and architecture and looking through the gallery, it's difficult to imagine this session happening anywhere else.

What I probably wasn't expecting was how much fun we would have. When people hear phrases like "palace engagement session" or "old-money inspiration", they often imagine something serious. Something polished. Something that takes itself very seriously. The photographs certainly look elegant, but what they don't show is how much laughing happened between frames. The conversations about wedding plans. The moments where we wandered into a new part of the gardens and collectively agreed that yes, somehow this corner was even prettier than the last one. The occasional disbelief that a place this beautiful can exist only a short drive (25 to 35 minutes) from Lisbon.

Perhaps because they remind me that photographs are rarely about the locations themselves, no matter how much I love talking about them but what people really remember is sense of being completely present in a particular moment before life moved on to the next thing. Engagements are particularly good at disappearing in the timeline. One minute you've just said yes, t next you're discussing guest numbers, comparing table layouts and wondering how your wedding is somehow only three months away and the engagement itself becomes a bridge between two chapters, which is exactly why I think it deserves celebrating in its own right.

Looking through Emma and David's photographs now I see two people choosing to pause for an afternoon and enjoy the chapter they're currently in instead of rushing towards the next one.

And honestly, I can't think of a better place to do that than Palácio de Queluz.

Perhaps I'm biased.

Actually, no.

I'm definitely biased.

But after all these years, I still leave convinced that it's one of the most beautiful places in Portugal.
