Lisbon is one of those cities that accidentally turns people into romantics.
Maybe it’s the golden light reflecting off old tiled buildings, the tiny streets that somehow always lead to a viewpoint or the fact that every good evening here somehow becomes dinner at midnight and “just one more glass of wine”.
Whatever it is, this city is ridiculously good for proposals and engagement sessions.
And one of my favourite things about Portugal is that within less than an hour, the entire atmosphere changes. One minute you’re in old Lisbon surrounded by trams and historic streets, the next you’re standing on dramatic cliffs near the ocean wondering if you accidentally walked into a film set.
So instead of creating another generic “Top 10 Lisbon photo spots” guide, I wanted to put together something actually useful.
This guide is divided by atmosphere and experience, because honestly? The best proposal location is the one that actually feels like you.
Whether you’re planning a surprise proposal in Portugal, an engagement session while visiting Lisbon or simply looking for beautiful places near Lisbon for photos, these are some of my favourite locations as a Lisbon wedding photographer.

There’s a reason so many couples choose Lisbon viewpoints and rooftops for their proposal or engagement photos.
It’s not just the view, it’s the feeling of standing above the city together while everything starts glowing gold around you. The rooftops, the river, the tiny pastel buildings, the trams in the distance… it all feels very “okay yeah, THIS is why we came to Lisbon”.
Viewpoints and rooftops are perfect for couples wanting that instantly recognisable Lisbon atmosphere in their photos without the session feeling overly posed or complicated. The city already does half the work for you.
Miradouro Das Portas do Sol
Probably the most iconic Lisbon viewpoint for proposals and engagement photos. Golden rooftops, Alfama glowing at sunset and the kind of atmosphere that immediately feels cinematic without trying too hard.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: This viewpoint feels instantly and unmistakably Lisbon. The rooftops, the river, the warm light reflecting across Alfama… it’s one of those places where people usually stop talking for a second and just look around.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunrise here is iconic for a reason. The city is still quiet, the light is softer and you get much more space to actually enjoy the moment without huge crowds around you, and trust me, after 9:30 am it changes drastically.
Weekdays and earlier hours usually work best here.
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
One of the most romantic viewpoints in Lisbon for couples wanting something that feels softer. Covered in traditional tiles, flowers and tiny hidden corners. It can get busy at sunrise but we always manage to find a spot.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: People usually fall in love with the atmosphere here. The tiled walls, bougainvillea and the river views make it all feel effortlessly romantic.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunrise here feels incredibly peaceful as you can sit down to enjoy it, especially before the city fully wakes up. Sunset is beautiful too, but this area becomes much busier once tourists start moving through Alfama during the afternoon.
Early mornings and weekdays are usually best.
Miradouro do Jardim do Torel
One of Lisbon’s best hidden gems for proposals and engagement photos. It has beautiful city views but feels much calmer and more local than the more famous viewpoints around Alfama.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: This spot feels relaxed in the best possible way. Couples usually love it because it gives the full Lisbon atmosphere without huge crowds, making it easier to actually enjoy the moment instead of feeling surrounded by tourists.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Late afternoons work beautifully here because the light starts hitting the city very softly from above. Sunrise is usually extremely quiet, while golden hour tends to feel warm, peaceful and less chaotic than other viewpoints in Lisbon.

Amoreiras 360º Panoramic View
A completely different side of Lisbon. Instead of historic rooftops and narrow streets, this viewpoint gives you huge skyline views across the entire city and one of the best panoramic sunsets in Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose this spot when they want something more modern, dramatic and slightly unexpected. The 360º views make Lisbon feel endless here, especially once the city lights start turning on around sunset. And it’s also a hidden gem.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is definitely the best moment here. The entire skyline turns gold and the city slowly lights up underneath you. Earlier hours are usually much quieter if you want more privacy for a proposal.
One of the best rooftop-style locations in Lisbon for skyline lovers.
Miradouro do Arco Rua Augusta
One of the most iconic rooftop views in downtown Lisbon. Right above the famous Rua Augusta arch, this spot gives you panoramic views over the city, the river and all the movement happening underneath.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: This location feels very “main character in Lisbon”. The combination of historic architecture, river views and busy downtown energy somehow makes everything feel cinematic without losing that real city atmosphere.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Golden hour works beautifully here, especially once the light starts hitting the buildings around Praça do Comércio. Earlier mornings are usually calmer if you want more privacy and fewer people around during the session.

Cais das Colunas
Minimal, elegant and very Lisbon. Located right by the river in Praça do Comércio, this spot feels quieter, softer and more editorial than the bigger viewpoints around the city.

Miradouro da Praia da Ursa
Wild, dramatic and slightly unreal, Praia da Ursa is one of the most breathtaking proposal and engagement locations near Lisbon. Huge cliffs, hidden beaches and the kind of scenery that immediately makes people feel like they accidentally stepped into a film.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose this viewpoint Praia da Ursa because it feels adventurous, intimate and completely disconnected from the city. SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset here is absolutely gorgeous as the sun sets right in the ocean. The light hitting the cliffs and ocean creates some of the warmest, most dramatic tones near Lisbon. Sunrise is usually quieter and softer, with fewer tourists around, but weather conditions matter a LOT here since fog is very common and wind can completely change the atmosphere.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Cabo da Roca gets VERY windy, and can be harsh during colder months. Bringing layers is highly recommended, even in summer. It can also get surprisingly crowded during peak hours, so weekdays and earlier or really late timings usually work best for a calmer experience.
Azenhas do Mar
Tiny white houses built directly into the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, Azenhas do Mar feels like one of those places people visit once and then immediately start looking at flights back to Portugal.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually love Azenhas do Mar because it feels incredibly romantic. It’s our portuguese Santorini. The combination of ocean views and the village built into the cliffs creates the most beautiful photos.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset, for sure. The light hitting the white buildings and reflecting across the ocean creates some of the warmest tones near Lisbon and you can go to dinner in the village right after to celebrate.
Santuário da Peninha
Wild, windswept and completely cinematic, Santuário da Peninha feels like one of those places that shouldn’t actually exist this close to Lisbon. Sitting high above the Sintra mountains with huge ocean views and dramatic rocky landscapes, it’s one of the most breathtaking proposal and engagement locations near Sintra.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Peninha because it feels adventurous and deeply connected to nature without needing a huge hike to get there. The views of the coast from this spot are the most beautiful in Sintra.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset here is honestly incredible, especially once the golden light starts hitting the rocks and coastline around the sanctuary. Sunrise feels moodier and much quieter, with softer foggy mountain atmosphere if the weather cooperates. Wind and changing weather are very common here, which honestly becomes part of the magic of this place.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Peninha sits high in the Sintra mountains, so temperatures and wind can feel very different from Lisbon, even in summer. Bringing layers is highly recommended. The roads up are winding and narrow in some sections, but the views once you arrive genuinely make it feel worth the drive. Great spot to bring some snacks and a bottle of wine and enjoy the sun setting in the ocean.

BEACHES & COASTAL ESCAPES
There’s a very specific kind of romance that only seems to happen near the ocean.
Maybe it's the salty hair. Maybe it's the fact that nobody looks at their phone while watching a sunset. Maybe it's the collective agreement that everything can wait until tomorrow.
Whatever it is, beach proposals and engagement sessions just hit different.
The Portuguese coastline is full of places that make people accidentally stay longer than planned, order another drink, walk a little further down the beach and start discussing whether moving here would be completely irresponsible.These locations are perfect for couples wanting photos that feel natural, emotional and very "remember the ocean in Portugal?"
Praia da Adraga
Dramatic cliffs, golden sand and one of the most beautiful sunsets near Lisbon, Praia da Adraga somehow feels cinematic without becoming too difficult or overwhelming for couples visiting Portugal for the first time.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually love Praia da Adraga because it gives you that wild Sintra coastline atmosphere while still being one of the easier beaches to access near Lisbon. The cliffs create incredible depth in photos, the ocean sunsets directly in front of the beach.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Praia da Adraga is surprisingly practical compared to some of the more hidden beaches nearby. Parking is relatively easy, especially later in the day, and the beach itself is located very close to the parking area, making it a much more comfortable option for couples wanting dramatic coastal scenery without a difficult hike.
Praia da Ursa
Wild, dramatic and incredibly secluded, Praia da Ursa feels like the kind of place people discover once and then spend the rest of the trip talking about. Hidden beneath huge cliffs near Cabo da Roca, this untouched beach is one of the most breathtaking proposal locations near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: The giant rock formations, crashing waves and raw coastline create photos that feel very cinematic! The beach also carries a beautiful local legend, its name comes from the enormous “bear-shaped” rock formations nearby, where according to Portuguese folklore, a mother bear and her cubs were turned into stone by the gods.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is the best time to go there. Sunrise can make for a very difficult climb back up in the summer months due to the heat.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Getting down to the beach does require a fairly steep hike with loose rocks and uneven terrain. It’s very worth it for adventurous couples, but definitely not the kind of location where you casually walk down in sandals five minutes before sunset. Good shoes, water and a little patience make a huge difference here.
Tróia
Long white sandy beaches, calmer ocean views and a much slower atmosphere than Lisbon, Tróia feels like the kind of place couples accidentally end up extending their trip for. Located just across the river from Setúbal, this coastal escape combines relaxed luxury with some of the most peaceful beaches near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Tróia because it feels elegant, quiet and completely disconnected from the city without needing to travel very far. The endless white sand, softer dunes and calmer atmosphere. The ferry ride over honestly becomes part of the whole experience too.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset here feels warm, peaceful and incredibly soft, especially during summer when the beaches stretch almost endlessly along the coastline. Sunrise is usually very quiet and perfect for couples wanting emptier beaches and softer pastel tones across the sand and ocean. Both work perfectly.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: The beaches here are huge, which means it’s usually very easy to find quieter areas even during warmer months but a bit harder to hide a photographer.
Comporta
Golden dunes, endless sandy beaches and that effortless barefoot luxury atmosphere people immediately fall in love with, Comporta feels less like a destination and more like a slower version of life for a few days.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Between the beach clubs hidden in the dunes, soft neutral tones, pine trees and huge white sandy beaches, everything here feels understated. It’s especially perfect for couples wanting engagement photos that feel editorial, warm and genuinely relaxed at the same time.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is the best time.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Comporta is much more spread out than people usually expect. Having a car makes a huge difference here, especially if you want to explore different beaches, rice fields and smaller hidden spots around the area. Comporta’s beautiful rice fields and natural reserve landscape also mean… mosquitoes. Especially during warmer months and around sunset. Bug spray is VERY recommended here.
Praia da Arriba
Hidden between the cliffs near Guincho and usually almost empty, Praia da Arriba feels like one of those beaches people only discover because a local told them about it. Wild, quiet and incredibly untouched, it’s one of the most secluded proposal locations near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Praia da Arriba because it feels private.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset here is absolutely gorgeous and this is a beach that only works for sunset.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: There’s no official or very defined pathway down to Praia da Arriba which honestly is part of what keeps it feeling like such a hidden gem. Access is easy but can feel suspicious at first. Trust the process.
Praia Grande
Wide open beaches, dramatic cliffs and some of the most beautiful sunsets near Sintra, Praia Grande feels cinematic in a very effortless and natural way. Between the Atlantic views, huge shoreline and relaxed atmosphere, it’s one of the easiest coastal locations near Lisbon to immediately fall in love with.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Praia Grande because it combines dramatic scenery with a much more comfortable and accessible atmosphere than some of the wilder beaches nearby. The beach is huge, which means it’s usually easy to find quieter areas for proposals or engagement photos while still getting those massive ocean views and soft coastal light.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is definitely the highlight here.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Praia Grande is one of the easiest beaches near Sintra to access, with parking located very close to the sand and several cafés and restaurants nearby. It’s also a very well-known surf beach.
Praia do Tamariz
Elegant, relaxed and sitting right in the heart of Estoril, Praia do Tamariz feels like the kind of place where a beach day accidentally turns into dinner, drinks and staying out way later than planned. Between the ocean views, palm trees and old Riviera atmosphere, it’s one of the most classic coastal spots near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: The mix of ocean light, the Estoril promenade, nearby cafés and sunset atmosphere creates engagement photos that feel effortlessly European and very “summer by the sea”.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is definitely the most romantic time here.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Praia do Tamariz is one of the easiest beach locations near Lisbon to access with train connections directly from Lisbon, nearby parking and several restaurants and bars within walking distance. Because it’s located right in Estoril, it can become quite busy during warmer weekends, especially in the afternoon.
Ericeira
Salt in the air, surfers walking barefoot through town and sunsets that somehow convince everyone to stay for one more drink, Ericeira feels like the cool girl of the Portuguese coast. Between the whitewashed streets, ocean views and relaxed atmosphere, it’s one of the most loved coastal towns near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually fall for Ericeira because it feels effortlessly cool without losing its charm. The combination of dramatic coastline, surf culture, cafés spilling onto the streets and golden evening light creates photos that feel romantic, lived-in and very "European summer".
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset is definitely the star of the show here. The cliffs glow gold, the ocean reflects the last light of the day and the entire town seems to slow down for a few hours. Sunrise feels quieter and softer, especially if you want emptier streets and viewpoints.

GARDENS AND PICNIC EXPERIENCES
Not every couple dreams about cliffs, rooftops or dramatic sunsets.
Some people just want a bottle of wine, a cute picnic, a shady tree and an afternoon that feels suspiciously like the opening scene of a romantic film.
These locations are for the couples who love slow mornings, long lunches, bookstores, gardens, wine estates and the kind of dates that accidentally last six hours. The photos usually end up feeling softer, more intimate and a little less "look at us" and a little more "this is exactly what we'd be doing anyway if nobody brought a camera."
Which, if you ask me, is a pretty great place to start.
Vandelli Botanical Gardens
Tucked away inside Lisbon and somehow still feeling incredibly peaceful, the Vandelli Botanical Gardens have that perfect slightly-forgotten romantic atmosphere people usually spend hours trying to find in bigger cities. Between the old staircases, overgrown corners and softer greenery, it feels much more intimate than the more famous gardens around Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: A mix of historic details, wild greenery and softer pathways creates engagement photos that feel almost film-like with a river view.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: It’s limited to the garden opening and closing hours so as early as possible or as late as possible, both works.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Because these gardens still feel relatively undiscovered compared to other Lisbon locations, the atmosphere here is usually much quieter. Perfect if you want to avoid big crowds.
Estufa Fria
Part botanical garden, part tiny hidden jungle in the middle of Lisbon, Estufa Fria feels completely disconnected from the city the second you walk inside. Tropical plants, filtered light and winding pathways make this one of the most unique engagement locations near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually fall in love with how immersive this place feels.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Since Estufa Fria is covered and protected by the greenhouse structure, the light stays soft and flattering throughout most of the day.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Estufa Fria only does photoshoots on Mondays.
Tapada das Necessidades
Wild, overgrown and slightly chaotic in the most romantic possible way, Tapada Das Necessidades feels less like a manicured garden and more like stumbling into a forgotten secret in the middle of Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: For the lovers of hidden pathways, abandoned greenhouse structures and greenery, this location feels a little moodier than the classic Lisbon locations.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset! Afternoons work beautifully here once the light starts filtering through the trees and warming up the gardens and during weekdays the park is nearly empty.
Quinta de Sant'Ana
Rolling vineyards, long countryside lunches and picnic setups that somehow feel straight out of a European summer film, Quinta de Sant’Ana is one of the most romantic vineyard escapes near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples constantly mention how peaceful and welcoming the atmosphere feels here. The yellow manor house is absolutely iconic.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset. Spring and Fall are especially stunning once everything around the estate becomes greener or more textured.
L'And Vinyards
Minimal architecture, vineyards stretching into the Alentejo landscape and long slow afternoons that somehow feel suspended in time, L’AND Vineyards is one of the most luxurious and romantic escapes near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose L’AND because the entire experience feels incredibly exclusive and peaceful. L’AND is very experience-focused: the vineyard picnics, wine experiences, spa atmosphere and slower rhythm are a huge part of why this place feels so romantic and immersive.

This category is for the people who watched Pride & Prejudice and thought, "yes, exactly that." The couples who immediately choose the scenic route. Who get emotionally attached to old buildings. Who can't walk past a palace without wondering what it would be like to live there.
These locations feel romantic before you even take a photo. Between the gardens, the architecture, the hidden corners and the general feeling that you've somehow wandered into another era, they turn a proposal or engagement session into something that feels a little bigger than just photos.
Basically, if your dream proposal involves fewer crowds and more "is this a movie set?", you're going to like this section.
Palácio de Monserrate
Monserrate Palace
Exotic gardens, hidden pathways and architecture that genuinely looks too beautiful to be real, Monserrate Palace feels like stepping into a romantic fantasy somewhere between Portugal and a dream version of Europe.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: It’s one of the few places near Lisbon that genuinely feels magical from every angle.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Doesn’t matter unless you plan for two locations within the same photoshoot.
IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Monserrate is usually much, much calmer than Pena Palace or Regaleira and a lot more private.

Moody, cinematic and slightly mysterious in the best possible way, Biester Palace feels like the kind of place where a film would quietly fall apart or begin (and really did! Check the The Ninth Gate ). Hidden among Sintra’s forests, the estate combines dramatic architecture with one of the most atmospheric gardens near Lisbon.
WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Biester because it isn’t overly touristy. It is incredibly unique compared to the more classic Sintra palaces.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Both! Foggy mornings here are unreal. The mist around the gardens and palace creates one of the moodiest atmospheres near Lisbon. Late afternoons work beautifully too once the warmer light starts filtering through the trees surrounding the estate.
Valverde Sintra - Palácio de Seteais
Elegant arches, mountain views and one of the most timeless atmospheres in Sintra, Seteais Palace feels effortlessly romantic in a very old-Europe kind of way.

Palácio de Queluz

WHY COUPLES LOVE IT: Couples usually choose Pestana Palace because it combines luxury and intimacy. Being able to stay at the hotel honestly becomes part of the whole experience, especially for destination couples wanting a slower and more romantic city stay.
SUNRISE VS SUNSET: Sunset! Late afternoons are especially beautiful here and evenings also work incredibly well if you want a more luxurious and atmospheric city feeling around the estate.

SUNSET SAILS
This category is for romantics, sunset chasers and people who firmly believe that champagne tastes better on the water looking into the city skyline, the bridge, the river, the light bouncing everywhere... it all feels ridiculously cinematic. Add a proposal into the mix and suddenly you've become one of those couples strangers secretly root for from a distance.
Fair warning though: sailing around Lisbon at sunset may cause an immediate desire to quit your job and move to Portugal.

Champagne, golden light reflecting across the Tagus and Lisbon slowly disappearing behind you, private sailboat experiences are easily one of the most romantic proposal ideas near Lisbon.
