Surprise Proposal at Castelo de São Jorge | Jeff & Ali
One of the things I find endlessly fascinating about destination proposals is how wildly optimistic they are as a concept.
Think about it for a second: planning a proposal is already stressful enough when you're doing it close to home. Now add international flights, hotel bookings, airport security, an engagement ring travelling across continents, a city you've never navigated before and the very real possibility of your partner suddenly deciding they don't feel like leaving the hotel that morning.
And yet people do it all the time. In fact, I'd argue they do it precisely because of that. A proposal during a trip feels different, it becomes attached to something bigger than the proposal itself. Years later, couples rarely remember the exact words that were said. They remember the trip, the restaurant where they celebrated afterwards, the sunshine, the exhaustion, the excitement and the feeling that everything was happening all at once in that specific time and place.
Jeff and Ali's proposal felt very much like one of those stories.
The couple had travelled from the United States to spend a few days exploring Lisbon, which is a city that has a habit of making people feel slightly more romantic than usual. I don't know whether it's the light, the architecture or the fact that everyone spends most of the day wandering uphill towards a viewpoint, but something happens to people here. People stay out later, they order another bottle of wine and think going to the hotel on foot will absolutely be a great idea.
By the time Jeff and Ali arrived at Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon was doing a particularly good job of proving its own point.
The city looked exactly how people hope Lisbon will look before they arrive. Terracotta rooftops stretching in every direction, the river sparkling in the distance and enough golden light bouncing around the castle walls to make every photographer in a ten-kilometre radius slightly emotional. And then, because apparently all of that wasn't dramatic enough already, Jeff proposed.
One of the reasons I actually love Castelo de São Jorge for proposals is that it gives moments room to breathe. Some proposal locations are beautiful but hectic. They're places people pass through. The castle is different. People linger, explore, stop at the different viewpoints. It doesn't immediately screams “proposal location” .
Which is exactly what happened here.
I feel like the photos speak through themselves so I’ll leave you to take a peek.
Photographing this version of happy people is one of my favorite parts of my job.
Looking through these photographs now, I don't just see a proposal. I see a day that feels very Lisbon and two very happy-we-just-got-enagaged-people! And that’s why I love this so much.

I'm always happy to help couples create an experience that feels genuinely true to them as much as I do to photograph happy stories.
