Engagement Session at Santuário da Peninha in Colares

If I had think about the perfect location for Iara and Luís all over again, I’d still go back to Santuário da Peninha, hidden in the Sintra mountains near Colares.

You drive up winding roads thinking “surely this cannot get prettier”, then you park and then suddenly the entire landscape opens up in front of you. Cliffs, ocean views, giant rocks, dramatic skies and that very specific Sintra wind that somehow makes every couple look like they belong in an indie romance film.

Which, to be fair, was very much the vibe with Iara and Luís.

From the very beginning, this session felt effortless in the best possible way. No overcomplicated posing or pressure to perform for the camera, just the two of them fully leaning into the experience together. Laughing through the wind, climbing rocks and cuddling between shots and this is exactly why I always tell couples that engagement sessions are not about “perfect poses”. They’re about movement, connection and creating photos that feels very you.

Peninha gives you so much. One minute you’re surrounded by dramatic rocky landscapes that feel almost otherworldly and the next you’re in softer forest light with golden sun slipping through the trees. It’s one of the reasons I genuinely think this is one of the most underrated engagement session locations in Sintra. The variety is honestly insane.

For Iara and Luís, we started in the forest area and then went higher up near the sanctuary itself, taking advantage of the blue hour tones and the open landscape. The colder light mixed beautifully with their neutral outfits and gave the whole first part of the session this quiet cinematic feeling.

Also: honorary mention to Júlio, their doggo, who absolutely understood the assignment.

There’s something really special about photographing couples in places that allow them to move naturally instead of just standing still for photos. Some of my favourite images from this session happened in-between the prompted actions: Luís helping Iara climb the rocks, the wind completely taking over her hair, the two of them laughing after almost losing balance approximately seventeen times which made me questions our life decisions 100 times.

Realistically? That’s the good stuff!

This place is made for couples who want their photos to feel cinematic, emotional and slightly adventurous without needing to hike for six hours or wake up at 4am.

If you’re planning an engagement session in Sintra and want something that feels dramatic but still deeply personal, Santuário da Peninha is genuinely one of my favourite locations to recommend.

Especially if you:

  1. love nature but still want elegance

  2. want movement and honest emotion in your photos

  3. don’t mind a little wind or dirt

  4. secretly want your relationship to look like an A24 film

Which, honestly… same.
